About TomTom EV /

With the increasing prevalence of hybrid and fully electric vehicles (EVs), and a rising awareness of environmental protection, TomTom is developing an innovative system tailored specifically for EV users. This system aims to address the unique challenges associated with driving and maintaining electric vehicles, ensuring a seamless and stress-free experience.
Pain Points /
As the adoption of electric vehicles grows, the accessibility and availability of EV charging stations have become critical concerns. Many drivers experience range anxiety, a heightened stress caused by uncertainty about whether they will have access to compatible charging stations or enough range to reach their destination. The TomTom EV Service aims to alleviate this anxiety by providing comprehensive global coverage of both static and dynamic EV charging station information. This service offers real-time data on availability, charging station brands, operator names, connector types, operating hours, payment methods, accessibility, and locations. By empowering drivers with this information, the service makes the driving experience less stressful and more enjoyable.
Scenarios /

This freelance project benefits from extensive early-stage research conducted by the research team, which has been passed on to me. My primary responsibility is to analyze these materials and translate them into practical design solutions. After thorough examination, I have summarized the findings into several use cases. Here is one illustrative example that highlights the functionality and distinctiveness of this product compared to other TomTom offerings:

-
Scenario: A user plans a route to their parent's home, but the app indicates insufficient power to complete the trip. The app warns the user and suggests planning a route that includes a stop at a charging station.
-
-

Workflow: On the map, the user can see which part of the route is not feasible, their current range, and nearby charging stations. -
Action: The user selects a charging station, the route is recalculated to include the stop, and they can make an appointment for charging if necessary.

User's Workflow /

Based on the scenario described, I illustrated a detailed workflow, highlighting potential situations the user might encounter and the solutions available to achieve their goal.

Comparative Benchmarking /

Before progressing to the next phase, I reviewed several TomTom series products to understand their style and design logic. Although this is a new product, maintaining consistency in style and interface with the broader TomTom family is crucial.

UI Flow & Operational Steps /

Given the tight project schedule, I decided to proceed directly with the visual design while simultaneously developing the UI flow. After familiarizing myself with TomTom products, I gained a better understanding of the interface, components, and operational steps. Following discussions with the project manager, who was supportive of my decision, we eagerly anticipated the final product.

Color Palette and Icons /

Despite existing guidelines for TomTom products, the content varies depending on machine type and is adjusted based on concept, user needs, target audience, car type, and functionality. For this environmentally friendly, energy-saving project aimed at hybrid cars, I chose a color scheme that evokes awareness of environmental protection. I selected Chartreuse to symbolize eco-friendliness and energy recycling. This color not only reminds users of nature but also provides psychological comfort and peace. I used wine color as an alert or to indicate insufficient fuel. The predominant use of Chartreuse and its variations distinguishes this product from other TomTom series. For fonts, I opted for the standard type to maintain consistency. Additionally, I designed a few unique icons specific to this project, alongside the universal icons found in other TomTom products.

Project Delivery /

The client was pleased with the outcome, and the final product met their criteria. Some adjustments were made to the colors and icons, but overall, the collaboration was successful. I feel honored and privileged to have had the opportunity to work with TomTom. This project has been an exquisite learning experience and a valuable opportunity to collaborate with a leading company in the industry.
